In January this year over 60 refugees were freed after 8 years in detention. These refugees were brought to Australia through the Medevac Law as they were in need of medical treatment. Instead of obtaining the medical treatment required, they were locked in hotel detention for up to 2-years. This is subsequent to many years locked up in Manus Island and Nauru Detention Centres.
Whilst many of our friends are now free, the Federal Government is providing little support. This has left it up to us, the community, to respond.
Refugee Voices is in direct communication with the recently released men and is assisting them to find work, housing and appropriate services. Amidst the current global pandemic crisis it is a particularly difficult time to seek employment and refugees are already vulnerable to exploitation.
All funds raised at this event will go toward supporting the recently released refugees by covering essential costs, such as clothes, food and transport, as well as assisting them to settle into the community, safely and securely.
Refugee Voices is a newly founded community organisation committed to ensuring that when it comes to the policies, campaigns and decisions that affect refugees, refugee voices are heard loud and clear. Many organisations advocating on behalf of refugee rights fail to incorporate the lived experience of refugees in their campaigns and do not represent refugees in the highest levels of leadership in their organisational structure. Refugee Voices is an organisation that centres people with lived experience in policy debate and the media narrative surrounding people seeking asylum.
If you are unable to attend you can still donate.
